This is not the case.
There are bands and artists out there that you are presently unaware of. Or maybe you are subconsciously aware of them, but have never realised that it was *insert band name here*'s song that was on the trailer of the film that you watched.
Without further ado, here's a list of bands and artists that I believe you will be hearing a lot more of in the year to come:
Haim
They've played shows with the likes of Ke$ha and Mumford and Sons, as well as supporting Florence and the Machine on their recent UK and Ireland tour, released single 'Don't Save Me', that debuted on Zane Lowe's BBC Radio 1 show and have recently won BBC's sound of 2013 award. Not bad for a band who only got signed last year.
General Ghost
General Ghost is made up of Kyle Rictor and Jon Howard, who released two EP's last year. Debut EP 'Give Me To The Waves' first followed by 'If Then' slightly later on in the year, the band offering a free download for both EP's via noisetrade.
Great chill-out music with wonderful lyrics, General Ghost are releasing their debut album later on this year. I really hope they get some more recognition, because they truly do deserve it.
Alt-J
Alt-J's debut album 'An Awesome Wave' was released last year, and the quarter were rewarded with a Barclaycard Mercury prize for their efforts.
Make Sparks
BBC Radio 1's Ally McRae has described Make Sparks as having "some of the catchiest songs ever written", and call me a biased fan-girl, but I think that I'd have to agree. Their EP 'Part of the Masquerade' is pop rock at it's finest. Watch out for their debut album, which should be released later this year.
MMX
MMX are a reformed Francesqa, who had a pretty dedicated following before splitting up in 2011.
Lucky for us, they joined forces once more to release single 'Cold World', followed closely by 'Follow'.
Their debut EP is set to drop on the 3rd February. I'm expecting big things from this band.
Twenty One Pilots
Fell in love with them instantly. The giants that are Fueled By Ramen (Paramore, Fun. and VersaEmerge's record label) signed these guys last year, and boy am I glad that they did.
Their live shows look amazing, and they write some of the best lyrics that I have had the pleasure of reading in years. I have a feeling that they are going to blow up in a similar way to Fun. last year. Watch this space.
Josh Osho
You might have heard a few of his songs playing in the background of adverts or on Sky Sports, but you really do need to listen to the full version of the tracks to appreciate just how wonderful this man's voice is.
I saw him supporting Emeli Sande last year, and immediately came to the conclusion that he was going to be a huge success sometime very soon.
Candy Hearts
With the amount of exposure these guys are getting, it's only a matter of time.
I'm going to throw my hands up and say it, I wasn't sold on them the first few times I listened to them, but I am slowly warming up to them. They seem like the sweetest people out there, and I genuinely do wish them all the best.
I wouldn't be surprised if they end up supporting Paramore on tour this year.
Also, if you're a bit of a vinyl junkie, check out the vinyl they released for 'The Best Ways to Disappear' EP. It's one of the most beautiful vinyl I have ever seen.
