Korean Cheese Ramen?! Are you serious?!

Curiosity strikes! I found these Korean Cheese Ramen in one of my local Asian stores (I think it was in Ming Sing 明星) , and I actually wanted to try it out!
Korean Cheese Ramen
You cook the noodles in a pot or microwave with the soup base and dried vegetables and ham pieces.
Red packet is the dried veg and ham; Silver packet is the soup base; Yellow packet is the cheese powder

Then you add the dried cheese powder in afterwards.
Add the cheese powder in
Mix and voila!
Cheese Ramen ^_^
I was a bit hesitant at first before eating these because I haven't tasted these before, but I had a go and ate the whole thing! The noodles tasted a bit bland. But the soup... the soup... it's cheesy and spicy at the same time, creamy and absolutely addictive. (^_^)b It's like having overcooked spaghetti and cheese sauce with a bit of pepper added in...

I'm amazed the Koreans invented this!! Heheh.

I think I'm going to buy a few more of these... I can't remember the price, but I'm sure it was under £1. I don't all Asian stores have them, but have a look and find them!! ^_^

Yo! Burger - is it worth it?

I have been DYING to try out a rice burger for ages! And I mean since I've seen them in pictures. So when Yo! Sushi decided to do a limited version of their rice burger called Yo! Burger (costing £8 ¬,¬"), I really wanted to try it out!! (It's been out for weeks, more than a month, and it's only now that I've just been able to go out and try it!)...

It's really hard to find a person to go out with. They either have no money to spend, they're on duty, can't get away from work so early or just don't like sushi... So I dined alone. Not ashamed of it. I have started to learn how to dine alone in case friends decided to bail out on me. It's actually quite fun, as you get to choose the timing of when you want to eat and leaveat your own accord... Must do it more often :D

I ordered the Salmon Yo! Burger which has kimchi in it, and it's served with nori crackers, pickled salad and misochup (ketchup made with miso apparently!).
My tray of food
As I looked at it, and taking pictures of it, I thought this is so small... plus how the heck am I supposed to eat it?! I felt like I was being served a dinner tray actually ¬,¬ ... I'm not in school anymore! (Fact about my geeky life: In all the schools that I went to, I never had food trays with compartments...).
Salmon Yo! Burger from the side view
I couldn't see the kimchi. I think I saw about 3 pieces of cooked salmon though covered in probably a kimchi sauce. There were courgettes and other vegetables (possibly the kimchi) - I can't even remember what was in the burger. I tried eating it with a tissue wrapped around it, but it was hard to eat as the rice 'buns' were still hot! ¬,¬" In the end I had to stop and eat it layer by layer... The sensible Geek strikes again! o(^_^)O
Bad close up of my Salmon Yo! Burger
The nori crackers were nice, but they just tasted like normal prawn crackers. However the misochup was great stuff! I thought it was a curry sauce at first as it tasted like curry, but I read about it later and it's actually miso paste made into a 'ketchup'-like sauce... Tasty stuff!

Hmmm wasn't too keen on the pickled sides, but I had lots of it in the end.

I also had a few other plates of sushi, fruit and gyoza... Was hungry...
Just added this in... I love sashimi!!
So My Geeky Results! Is it worth it or not worth it? ... It's a YES and a NO, 50-50, half and half... ^_^ You get the point...

YES - it's worth it just to try it out and if you have a small appetite, but,
NO - it's not worth it because of the price and size of the burger if you have a bigger appetite! You can get a bigger burger (not a rice burger) in other places for the same price!

In the end I spent £30.10!! Blimey what did I eat?! I went over my budget by £10.10 :( ... Nevermind... Less spending next month then!

La Tasca - Maiden Street, Covent Garden

Apparently it's been a long time since I met up with my friend Miss Money. Well, I last saw her in March, so it's not that long really! It was my decision to decide where to go to, and so I gave her the choice of what to eat... Korean, Japanese, Spanish, Indian, Italian or Thai... She hates spicy foods unfortunately. :( Lots of my close friends don't seem to like spicy foods!

In the end it was a choice of Japanese or Spanish. We chose Spanish. Miss Money has not had Spanish food before!! And the only place I know of that does Spanish food is La Tasca served by actual Spanish people (there are other places, but I have never been to them). The one near Oxford Street is closed and the one in St Jame's Street was a bit far from where were meeting up. So we ended up in Covent Garden. It's not hard to find La Tasca in Maiden Street. When you see TGI Friday's, then you know you are near it.

From the window we thought there was no one inside, as no one was seated at the window. But as we went in, there is a bigger dining area at the back. (Sorry for the quality of the photos... not great with an LG phone - but I now have a secondhand Samsung SG4 phone which I bought as my previous phone wasn't insured :( ... Now I have to start saving big time!).
At the back of La Tasca in Maiden Street, Covent Garden
I have only been to La Tasca twice, and usually the people I'm with order for the entire table. I think Miss Money wanted to spend less, but eat different things. I couldn't recommend much except for the seafood paella and the chorizo. So in the end, we had the "Chef's Recommends". That meant we would spend £15 each minus drinks.
All the food we had for the "Chef's Recommends"

My diet coke... Not sure why I pictured this XD
What's in the Chef's Special? Quite a variety of things. Anybody who hasn't had Spanish food I think should have this as it introduces spicy and non-spicy elements of Spanish food...

This dish was a bit spicy for Miss Money, but she ate a lot of  it!
Spicy Roasted Vegetable Cassolo with Almond
These were nice. A very tasty filling, and reminded Miss Money of chicken kievs. :)
Croquetas de Pollo
Miss Money and I thought the burgers were a bit dry... Overcooked?
Home-made beefburgers
This was good. It didn't need the sauce. It was salty, tasty and juicy enough. The fish inside was fresh too...
Pescado Blanco Frito
The Pollo Marbella was ok... I liked the chicken, but this is quite a saucy dish, and we could have had some bread to accompany with this.
Pollo Marbella
I like paella. But this is ridiculous and small for my appetite. :( I like loads and loads of paella!! Next time, I'm going to order a big one! :P
Paella Del Dia
I liked the patatas. Nice and spicy for me but not for Miss Money.
Patatas Bravas
Miss Money eats slow, really slow, so I had to try and eat slow too, which I got full quite easily... But I had that feeling that I would have wanted a bit more. Like those big paellas! ^_^

In the end, service was ok, not the greatest. We got seated by the door, with tall chairs and by the small steps where you can feel the waiters and waitresses just flying about trying to get to each customer. I have not been to Spain yet, so I don't know if Spanish restaurants are like this. In the other La Tasca's I have been to I didn't get this feeling about the service.

Total cost came to £36 something, including drinks. A little expensive for what we had. :(

Here's one of my Instagram pics whilst being at Trafalgar Square... Was catching up with her about work and life...
At Trafalgar Square... This is the column that gets different designs on it every few months...

And here's our desert at Boba Jam ^_^
Yummy bubble drinks at Boba Jam!
My geeky rating: 3.5/5

Good points:
- Ok choices on the Chef Special, but I needed more, but not Miss Money. She was really full.

Bad points:
- Didn't entirely like the table we sat at as the food got cold too quickly
- Hasty service - Miss Money was going to tip them, but didn't in the end!
- Would consider it expensive - anything over £10 even when I'm paying half and the food doesn't completely fill me I consider it expensive.

Simple Spring Rolls

I'm writing this post for my friend Mrs Hen who LOVES spring rolls. Prawn ones. Vegetable ones. All the spring rolls in the world! Hahahah!! ^_^

These are real basic instructions that you can just follow (and I'm sure there's millions of posts and videos out there that will show you the same thing). The ingredients do not have to be exactly the same as the ones shown here! My friend, who I will call Mrs Travels, used cheese and prawns, and they were delicious (she's Chinese as well, and married to a Frenchman a.k.a. Mr Travels)...

So basic ingredients needed are as follows. You can use vegetables alone if you don't like to add meat or seafood. The wrappers cost £1.50 and there's 50 wrappers in the packet. Pre-cut vegetables for £1. Cooked shrimps were £2.50 (from a stall in East Street Market) and the egg - I guess this cost a few pennies but they came in a box! ^_^ So this Chinese snack cost just over £5! Not bad. In most restaurants and takeaway stores they will sell 2, 3 or 4 spring rolls for £1 or more!! Shocking!
My ingredients
Here's the picture instructions and full instructions are below (sunlight was in the way for the first few pics, whoopsie ¬,¬")...

Place wrapper diagonally

Place a tiny amount of vegetables and 2 or 3 shrimps at the end facing you

Fold the tip over the ingredients

Roll once (or twice if there's loads of ingredients)

Fold in edges, then roll

Use some egg white to seal the roll

Prawn and salad spring roll made ^_^

34 wrapped spring rolls!!!! Made in half an hour!!!

Add the spring rolls into the preheated pan and oil

Cook for 2-3 minutes per side (it's like cooking a sausage)

Done! Some tasty spring rolls ^_^

Ingredients:
1. Cooked shrimps (the ones above I bought from East Street Market, which were in salt water). Or you can use defrosted prawns
2. Pre-washed and chopped up vegetables (you can prepare your own if you wish)
3. 1 egg (use only the egg white and you can discard the yolk)
4. Defrosted spring roll wrappers, which you can find in any Asian store - there are largers ones available. You can also use the round ones.
5. Vegetable oil for frying

How to prepare and cook (you can find instructions on the spring roll wrappers too):
1. Take one of the defrosted wrappers, making sure that one of the pointed sides is facing you (as in place it diagonally)
2. Take a small amount of the pre-washed vegetables and place at the pointed edge facing you, but leaving some space at the end...
3. Add a couple of shrimps on top of the vegetables
4. Fold the tip of the edge (the one facing you) over the filling
5. Then roll over once (or twice if you have a lot of ingredients)
6. Fold the edges inwards, then continue to roll
7. Once you reach the end of the rolling, dab a little egg white and then roll it over once more. The egg white will seal it.
8. Place in a plate and cover either with a clean damp cloth or a piece of kitchen roll
9. Repeat the above until you have run out of ingredients or until you have enough

Next...
10. Heat your frying pan (or deep fryer or big saucepan), add your oil
11. Slowly add in your spring rolls (about 5 or 6 at a time - depends on the size of the pan you use... I added about 11 or 12 in one go)
12. If you are using a frying pan, fry them for 2-3 minutes on each side (like frying a sausage)... For a deep fryer or a sauce pan - for about 3 minutes or until they are golden brown
13. Remove the spring rolls and place them onto a plate. You can use some kitchen towel to remove the excess oil...
14. Repeat steps 10-13 until you have cooked them all... Otherwise you can store them by freezing them until you are ready to use them. You can cook these frozen so you don't need to defrost them)
15. Finally let them cool for 5-10 minutes before eating and serving them

And that's how you make spring rolls!! ^_^

Easy?

aobaba in Longdan Express - Elephant and Castle

I am being a lazy blogger... I'm playing Candy Crush and I'm on level 117... I hate this game by the way. It becomes frustrating when you've almost finished a level and then you don't have any more moves left!

Er... uh-hm, what? Oh. Am I supposed to be talking about aobaba? The cafe / restaurant that has FINALLY opened in Longdan Express. Uh well yes I am!! Whoopee!! ^_^
Outside aobaba

Inside aobaba

Another view

The leaflet

The other side
So last Friday after work I went to have a look at it. I was dying to have a taste at their bubble tea, and see if it is good enough as those other places that serve bubble tea. It's funny how bubble tea has become so famous in the UK all of a sudden. You can see shops of them all over the place i.e. China Town...

In aobaba they give you a choice of making your own mixture of bubble tea. So you choose the type of tea you want milk (which is 50p more than the other tea base) or black tea / green tea / crushed ice. Then next you choose are the type of bubbles you want in the tea... tapioca pearl, boba or jelly.

The first one I went for was the green apple tea (don't know if it was green or black tea used), and the girl at the counter suggested I choose the lychee topping (can't remember if it was tapioca pearl or the boba). The green apple tea tasted sour. Yeek. But the lychee topping compensated for the sourness. If you like sour stuff, go for the green apple flavour!!
Green apple tea and lychee bubble tea
aobaba also serves food. Woohoo! :D So I also asked the girl what to have... She recommended the spring rolls, and I found myself ordering the mix and match spring rolls. They were good. But expensive at £4. :(
My mix and match spring ro

Total cost: £7

After you have ordered, they will call out your receipt number so you can collect your food. It's a bit like going to Argos! Hah!

I went back the next day to try out there pho.
Another view from the inside
It was a good day because it rained, and I was sure that this would warm me up for a bit. I had taken the leaflet that I was given. I was contemplating whether to have the beef pho or the OMG-bun than... I was thinking I would go for the latter but subconsciously ordered the beef pho! What was I thinking?! I also ordered the strawberry milk tea with strawberry pearls... Was it good?
Strawberry milk and strawberry pearls bubble tea

Hm, the beef pho's soup was a little salty to my liking. The pho was ok. There was thinly sliced beef and beef balls (they are like fishballs). The sliced beef was ok, but not as tender as the one I had in Dallas or Cafe Mama Pho. I could taste and smell some of the herbs that were in which was bearable...
Beef pho

A different view of my beef pho

The best part of this dining trip was definitely the strawberry milk bubble tea! Oh it was definitely tasty than the apple green tea! I would definitely recommend all the milk bubble teas (I haven't tried them all yet ¬,¬"). They are the best!

Total cost: £10.50

I dined alone on both occasions, and so did a lot of people who went in there. Some were in groups too. It is a big dining area, but the bins in purple are quite hard to see. I actually left my tray on the table on both occasions because I did not know where to put them! Some people were handing them back to the people at the counter... Something that needs to be improved on in time...

Would I recommend aobaba? Yes - definitely for the bubble tea. I think I will need to try out the other food in the nearest future.

I forgot to mention there is also free wi-fi!! After purchasing your food, you will find a password (which changes everyday) on the bottom of your receipt. I used it twice on both occasions, and the reception is not bad...

My geeky rating: 4/5

Good points:
- Get to choose your own mixture of bubble tea
- Food is freshly made for you
- Dining area is really spacious
- Free wi-fi

Bad points:
- A little expensive
- Could do with some visible bins
- Salty soup (recipe change needed)

Japanese Kit Kat Dark Chocolate and Taro Mix from Oyatsu Cafe

Yipee!! Thanks to @grocerygems for introducing this website!! Grocery Gems has a 15% discount code ("GROCERYGEMS") you can use which is unlimited and can be used worldwide!! Wow! I'm amazed. Unfortunately I am a bit stupid and had entered the discount code into the wrong box. Instead of going onto the Shopping Cart page (which is where you are given the option to "use coupon code" or "calculate shipping") I somehow got onto the Checkout page and had entered the discount code in the comments!! Dumb Geek!! I bow my head in shame... :( ごめんなさい!(gomen'nasai - I'm sorry). But I will show you where to go at the end of this post.

Anyway, back to the snacks. (^_^)v

Japan Centre sells their Kit Kat for a very expensive price. But after being introduced to this site they sell their Kit Kat (there's only two flavours by the way - matcha green tea and dark chocolate) for a cheaper price at US$6.99. Postage and packaging is even cheap! Vastly cheap!!!!!

So as usual, here's a packet of 13 mini dark chocolate Japanese Kit Kat. I also bought myself a UK version to compare.
Packet of 13 Japanese Dark Chocolate Kit Kat's

On the back of the package

Definitely mini!
The Japanese version tastes so much better!! It has a real biscuity taste that makes you want more. The dark  chocolate itself is not as dark as the UK version. And both smell rather different. The Japanese version tastes more like milk chocolate than dark... The UK one tastes rather sweet and bitter, and it takes away the biscuit taste. They are both of the same width, but the Japanese one is smaller than the UK one. The UK one is heavily coated with dark chocolate.
So small XD

Comparing the UK and Japanese version

The Japanese one...

More dark chocolate in the UK version (right) than the Japanese one (left)
Verdict: I like the Japanese one more!

Now here's something different. It came in a little nice bag.
Cute paper bag!
I was intrigued by this Taro Mix. And yes you may have guessed why... It was the wasabi flavour that caught my attention! I love all wasabi snacks! These snacks are a bit different as they are made of cod paste and are coated in different flavours. These cost US$3.49 for the 5.
5 mixed Taro
Okonomiyaki-san Taro (お好み焼きさん Mr Japanese Pancake) - smells like worcester sauce or okonomiyaki sauce. Tastes a bit salty and fishy like dried cuttlefish that you can get in Asian stores. It's a bit sticky to the teeth at first too.
Okonomiyaki-san

A piece of dried cod paste
Yakiniku-san Taro (焼肉さん Mr Roast)- smells sweet, like candy floss. Spicy. Has a very kimchi like taste! ^_^. Lightly fishy and salty taste to this one. Reminds me of sweet dried pork slices that you can get in Hong Kong.
Yakiniku-san
Sudako-san Taro (酢だこさん Mr Vinegar) - very wet to the touch. Vinegary wet surrounding. It tastes very vinegary. So if you like pickles you will definitely like this one! (By the way, wasn't the girl in The Ring called Sudako?! O_o)
Sudako-san

Wet vingery taro
Kabayaki-san Taro (蒲焼さん Mr Grilled) - wasn't sure what flavour this next one was, but I started sucking on it. And it tasted like the roast meat one. Reminds me of Hong Kong snacks...!
Kabayaki-san
Wasabi Nori Taro (わさびのり wasabi paste)!! - No strong wasabi smell. But there is a strong wasabi taste to it! Prepare to get some water.
Wasabi Nori ^_^
Finally to enter the discount code, click on "CART", then you must go to "Calculate Shipping" as shown in the screenshot below.

Then select "Use Coupon Code", and then enter "GROCERYGEMS". Then finally go to CHECKOUT. It's that simple, and I didn't even notice!

Happy, happy shopping!! ^_^

Arigatou gosaimasu Katherine (thanks Katherine ^_^).
